Our History
The story of O’Brien-Sullivan Funeral Home begins in 1898, when T. P. Sullivan founded T. P. Sullivan and Sons Funeral Home in Detroit. Recognizing a need for funeral service rooted in value and integrity, Sullivan established a firm that quickly became a trusted presence in the community.
Over the decades, the business expanded to multiple Detroit locations under the direction of Sullivan’s sons. In 1950, John J. O’Brien joined the firm as an apprentice and later became president following the passing of Ted C. Sullivan in 1970.
In 1973, property was purchased in Novi to better serve families in Oakland County. Construction of a new facility began in 1975, and in May 1976, The O’Brien Chapel / Ted C. Sullivan Funeral Home opened its doors in Novi. The funeral home continued to grow under the leadership of the O’Brien family, maintaining the tradition of personalized service while adapting to the evolving needs of families.
In 1985, recognizing the importance of continued support after services conclude, the funeral home introduced an aftercare program to help families navigate the grieving process — a reflection of its longstanding commitment to community care.
Today, O’Brien-Sullivan Funeral Home remains dedicated to the same principles established over a century ago: compassion, professionalism, and service tailored to each family.
