Obituary

Age 94, of Northville. Retired Administrative Director of the City of Detroit Lighting Department and long time Officer and Director of the Detroit Retired City Employees Association. Preceded in death by his wife, Elvira on July 7, 2001. Mr. McKeown was descended from a family that migrated from upper New York State in 1834 and settled near Carleton, Michigan. Walter was born in Detroit and educated at the Holy Redeemer Schools. As a youth, he was active in the boy scouts and became the first Eagle Scout of Troop 226 in June, 1930. He graduated from high school in 1933 and entered Wayne University that September. He worked his way through college employed as a Bookbinder. After graduating in 1938 with a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration, he was hired as an accountant by Standard Oil. He left that company to accept a Civil Service position as a Realty Appraiser in the City of Detroit Assessor's office. He was in the Army from April, 1941 to November 1945 serving with the 32nd Infantry Division and the Air Force Training Command. After World War II, he returned to work at the city as an accountant in the Controller's office and later as Administrative Director of the Lighting Department and retired with more than 30 years of service. Walter earned an MBA at the University of Detroit in 1954 and was a director of the MBA Alumni Association for several years. He was a Past President of the City of Detroit Accountants Association and life member of Monaghan Council, K of C. He participated in many sports. Golf was his favorite game. He was an active player for sixty years. His estate will be shared by various charitable, educational and environmental organizations.
