Thomas Michael Duggan's Obituary

Thomas Michael Duggan
April 17, 1943 – May 31, 2025

Thomas "Tom" Duggan, a man whose zest for life was rivaled only by his deep devotion to family and community, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025, in West Bloomfield, Michigan, at the age of 82.
Born on April 17, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan—a city he loved with unwavering passion—Tom carried its spirit with him wherever he went. One of his favorite stories to share was of marching for Civil Rights in his youth, a proud moment that reflected his belief in justice and his commitment to a better world.

Tom was a man of many talents and even more interests. In his younger years, he was a skilled basketball player, a smooth dancer, and a pianist who could lose himself in the melody. As he grew older, he found great joy in writing novels—five in total—and spending cherished time with his three grandchildren. A lifelong music lover, Tom could often be found at live concerts, toes tapping, heart full. And, no summer day was complete for him without a toasted almond ice cream bar straight from the ice cream truck.

He had a remarkable way of connecting with people across generations, making fast friends wherever he went. Children marveled at his legendary ability to kick a soccer ball so high it seemed to disappear into the sky, while adults appreciated his sharp wit, kind heart, and candid charm. A skier with flair, a writer with depth, and a grandfather with endless love—Tom lived fully and joyfully.

Tom studied business at Wayne State University and had a fulfilling career in marketing, later finding great satisfaction as a substitute teacher, sharing his knowledge and humor with students of all ages.

Above all, Tom was proudest of his children and grandchildren. They were, in his eyes, the true wonders of his life. He is survived by his loving children—Kim, Shannon, Lauren, and Michael—and his adored grandchildren—Wesley, Sanjay, and Simran. He is also survived by his siblings Sandy and David. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Shirley, his sister, Maureen, and his brother, John.

Known for his warm laugh, spontaneous dancing, and signature expressions—like "Lord love a duck" and the enthusiastic "Shoot fire!"—Tom was loving, funny, and always refreshingly candid. He lit up every room he entered and never lost his childlike enthusiasm for the things he loved most.

Tom Duggan was deeply cherished by many, and his legacy will live on through the stories, smiles, and spirit he leaves behind. He will be missed more than words can express.
