Shirley Oldenburg
September 21, 1938 – January 5, 2026
Shirley Oldenburg, age 87, of Westland, Michigan, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, in Westland. She was born on September 21, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan.
Shirley was a kind, friendly, and outgoing woman whose faith guided her throughout her life. She was deeply evangelical and found great comfort, purpose, and joy within her church communities, which remained very important to her over the years.
One of Shirley's greatest accomplishments—and proudest roles—was raising her four children after the death of her husband, doing so with strength, devotion, and love, even when her youngest was only nine years old. Her children were the joy of her life, and she was immensely proud of each of them.
She enjoyed life's quiet and creative moments, spending her time reading, making puzzles, and coloring—activities that reflected her patience and gentle spirit.
Shirley graduated from Mercy High School in 1957. She devoted many years as a stay-at-home mother, and after her children were grown, she continued her caring nature through her work as a daycare teacher.
She is survived by her loving children: Lisa (John) Martek, Ernest Sternberg III, Paul (Sarah) Sternberg, and Richard (Michele Munde) Sternberg.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers and two sisters; and her two husbands.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy Catholic Church, in Westland, Michigan, beginning at 11:00 am. A brief visitation will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2026 beginning at 10:30 am.
