In 1983 Shirley became a brail transcriber for the blind. This was before computers so she would do this by hand. She was so skillful at this that the Library of Congress honored her for her work. In the mid 1980s Shirley and Edward moved to Kansas where they enjoyed golfing and ballroom dancing with their dear circle of close friends. They moved back to Michigan in 2004 and settled in at Fox Run where they formed a dance club that is still active today. Shirley was a member of the library committee at Fox Run and as part of the knitting club, she made hats for the poor and helmet warmers for soldiers. She was active in the community there and made many friends with other residents and thoroughly enjoyed her time there.
Shirley was independent until the very end. She will be missed by all who knew her.
