Norman Joseph Van Riper, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on March 5, 2026, in Farmington Hills, Michigan, at the age of 88. He was born on September 29, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Norman and Susan Van Riper.
Norm was a proud graduate of Detroit Catholic Central High School, Class of 1955, and later graduated from the University of Detroit. He built a successful career in sales, spending more than 20 years with McDonald Modular Solutions, where his personable nature and strong work ethic helped him form lasting relationships with colleagues and clients alike.
A man who truly enjoyed life's simple pleasures, Norm was an avid golfer and could often be found on the course with friends. He also loved playing Euchre and faithfully cheering on his favorite teams, the Detroit Tigers and Michigan State Spartans, especially during football season. Known for his corny jokes and quick sense of humor, Norm had a way of making people smile wherever he went. One of his favorite sayings, often heard among family and friends, was the "Van Riper Summer Home": "Some are home, some are not."
Norm was a longtime and dedicated member of the Monaghan Knights of Columbus, where he proudly served as a Grand Knight. His faith and commitment to community were an important part of his life, and he maintained many lifelong friendships through both Detroit Catholic Central and the Knights of Columbus. Norm had a gift for making friends wherever he went, and those friendships remained meaningful throughout his life.
Above all else, Norm was deeply devoted to his family. He shared 61 loving years of marriage with his beloved wife, Margaret Van Riper. He was the proud father of Jill (Darren) Moore and Stephen (Mackenzie) Van Riper, and nothing brought him greater joy than being a grandfather. He treasured every moment with his grandchildren: Allie (Jake) Parry, Rory, and Daniel Plancon, and Mia, Shane, Vivian, and Claire Van Riper. He is also survived by his sister, Sharon House, along with many loving nieces and nephews.
Norm was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Susan Van Riper, and his beloved grandson, Nolan Plancon.
