Margaret (Maggie) Patrice McKenna Russell, age 86, passed away suddenly on September 11, 2021 surrounded by beloved family members. Maggie was born to the late Walter P. and Bernice L. (Brown) McKenna in Detroit, Michigan on September 23, 1934. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Raymond and her children Raylene (David), Michael (Holly), Patrice (Glenn), and Daniel (Jeanette). She was a devoted sister to Sharon (Tony) Skwiers and the late Charlene (Arthur) Carlson and leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren plus many beloved nieces, nephews and life-long friends.
In the midst of raising four children, Maggie earned her Bachelor's Degree in English from Mercy College of Detroit and her Master's Degree in Education from Wayne State University. She retired after a 30 year career as a teacher with the Detroit Board of Education. The majority of her career was spent at Henry Ford High School where she became a well-respected and much loved English teacher. It was not unusual for her to run into former students who would report that her patience and guidance had led them to successful careers.
Maggie faithfully embraced her Irish heritage and, along with her sisters, travelled to County Monaghan, the birthplace of their ancestors, to attended a McKenna reunion. The McKenna girls were immediately adopted as "long-lost cousins" and spent three days singing, laughing, and learning about the family's history. In the Russell household, St. Patrick's Day was the most significant holiday and one of the very rare days that Maggie would skip school. With Ray as the designated driver, Maggie and her friends would begin the day by attending Mass at Most Holy Trinity Church in Corktown then embark on their journey to "visit" as many Irish pubs as possible, always closing out the day at the Weal Bar near her home.
Maggie was the heart of her family, the light in every room, the life of every party, and friend to everyone she met. She was devoted to her family, her close friends, and the Catholic church. May her Irish eyes continue to smile down upon us. Slainte, Margaret!
