Margaret McGill, fondly known as Marge or Margie, was a vibrant soul who embraced every day with a smile that radiated infectious joy, left this world on September 7, 2023, at the remarkable age of 101. Her boundless zest for life and her enchanting, fun-loving spirit drew people towards her, filling their lives with laughter and love. Marge was cherished by her family and friends as a wonderful mother, wife, aunt, great-aunt, and friend. She leaves behind her loving daughter Linda, her son-in-law George Tangalakis, and her niece Annette Keys. Her love and support knew no bounds, and her impact on their lives was immeasurable.
Marge's extended family, known as the Rose Clan, was a testament to the deep bonds she forged. These were the children and grandchildren of her dearest friends, Peg and George Rose, who affectionately called her "Aunt Margie."
Marge was preceded in death by her parents, Barbara Vasko and Alexander Mihok, as well as her step-father, Henry Herczog. She also mourned the loss of her sister, Barbara Doyle, and her step-brothers, Hank and Richard Herczog.
Marge's life was marked by enduring love. She shared 64 wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Thomas McGill, who preceded her in death in 2011. Tom, an accomplished insurance executive and Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army, was not just her husband but her partner in adventure and her steadfast companion throughout their remarkable journey together.
Born in Youngstown, Ohio, on July 23, 1922, Marge's early years were filled with promise. She graduated from Rayen High School, where her talents shone brightly as a member of the Acapella Choir, Girls Octet, and as a contributing editor to the school paper. Her pursuit of higher education led her to Ursuline College, Western Reserve University, and Dyke College, where she continued to cultivate her intellectual curiosity.
Marge embarked on a fulfilling career, serving as the Clerk of Courts for the City of Cleveland in her younger years. Her exceptional skills and dedication saw her rise to become the Executive Assistant to the Executive Vice President of the Global Automotive Division of TRW. Marge's impressive career earned her recognition in the Cleveland Plain Dealer on at least three occasions.
For 25 years, Marge called Richmond Heights, Ohio, her home, where she immersed herself in her community and her church. She took on roles as a School Chairman, President of the Ladies Guild, and a cherished member of the Church Choir. Alongside her husband, she engaged passionately in political pursuits, leaving a lasting impact on the causes they held dear.
In 1986, Marge and Tom embarked on a new chapter, settling in Pinehurst, North Carolina, where Marge's vibrant spirit continued to flourish. She again became deeply involved in her church, embraced the joys of golf, where she won awards for chipping. Her active participation in various groups, including the Women's Military Association, Red Hatters, the Sophisticated Ladies dance group, Bridge Club, Pinehurst Lake Association, and Note-a-Belles singing group, showcased her unwavering commitment to community and the arts. Her poetic talents were celebrated with an Editor's Choice Award from the National Poetry Society.
Marge loved entertaining and cherished moments with friends and family, while her talent for storytelling and writing endeared her to all. Her life was marked by extraordinary luck, winning $2,000 on the Art Linkletter's House Party Show in 1958 and 2 cars in a church raffle in Cleveland and she continued her winning streak by claiming every table prize at various functions. Her charisma and fun personality even earned her an inquiry to be on a game show in New York.
In November 2014, at the remarkable age of 92, Marge embarked on yet another adventure, moving to Fox Run in Novi, Michigan, to be near her family. She remained an active and engaged member of her community, participating in the Drama Club, Bridge Club, Choir, and hosting her own TV show on the Fox Run local cable network, "Marge McGill's Poetry Corner." Her charm extended to her role also as the beloved weather girl.
Throughout her life, Marge was defined by her boundless gratitude. She made it a point to express her appreciation to everyone who extended a helping hand, especially in her later years.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to honor Marge's memory. Contributions can be made to the Wounded Warriors, Tunnels to Towers, or St. James Catholic Church in Novi, Michigan, reflecting Marge's generous spirit and commitment to causes close to her heart.
Margaret McGill's life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and boundless enthusiasm. While she may no longer be with us in person, her vibrant legacy and love will continue to inspire us all to embrace each day with a smile, gratitude, and a zest for life. May she rest in eternal peace, forever in our hearts.
Gathering of family and friends at the O'Brien/Sullivan Funeral Home, 41555 Grand River Avenue, Novi, 248-348-1800 on Thursday, September 14, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a scripture service at 6:00 PM. Instate Friday, September 15, 2023 at St. James Catholic Church, 46325 W 10 Mile Road, Novi with the service beginning at 10:15 A.M. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery.
