Obituary

Lawrence Burke, age 87, of Livonia, Michigan, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026. He was born on May 13, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Ruth (O'Reilly) Burke and Thomas Burke.

Lawrence was a devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend whose life was centered on faith, family, and helping others. A graduate of Bentley High School in Livonia, he worked for many years as a carpenter for J.L. Hudson’s, where he took pride in his craftsmanship and strong work ethic. Lawrence could fix just about anything and was always ready to lend a helping hand, whether driving someone to a doctor’s appointment, repairing something in need, or simply being there for others during difficult times.

His faith guided every part of his life. Lawrence was a longtime member of St. Suzanne’s Church, where he participated in the Young Adults Club, faithfully served as an usher, and contributed his carpentry talents to the church, including work on the new altar. He prayed the rosary daily and carried God in his heart throughout his life.

Lawrence especially cared for those facing challenges similar to those experienced within his own family. Having lovingly helped care for his two handicapped brothers and remaining at home to look after his mother, he developed a deep compassion for others and often reached out to families in similar situations to offer support and encouragement.

He was a member of Big Brothers and was known for his generous spirit, kind heart, and wonderful sense of humor. Lawrence also had a lifelong love of baseball and was a devoted cat lover who cherished the companionship of his pets.

He is survived by his sisters, Elizabeth Schubel and Joan Fleming; as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will miss him greatly.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Earl, Jack, Charles, Terry, Tommy, and Dennis Burke.

Private services were held at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery.

Lawrence lived by the words he often shared: “Love isn’t love until you give it away.” His life was a beautiful example of generosity, faith, and compassion, and his memory will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
