Karen Elizabeth McCarthy, 70, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, in Walled Lake, Michigan, after a long and courageous battle with multiple sclerosis.

Born on April 8, 1956, in Winter Haven, Florida, Karen was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel Leo McCarthy and Jacquelyn Louise McCarthy.

Karen is lovingly remembered by her sister, Patricia L. McCarthy; her brothers, Daniel L. McCarthy (Joyce), James C. McCarthy (Renee), and John R. McCarthy; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

A proud graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Karen continued her education by earning her Master of Business Administration from New York University. She began her professional career at a law firm in New York City before embarking on a successful career with several advertising agencies and design firms in both New York City and Chicago.

In early 1993, Karen made Chicago her home, purchasing a house on the city's West Side with her former husband, Donald Schultz. She built a life filled with friendships, creativity, and the simple joys that meant the most to her.

Karen had a passion for cooking, gardening, listening to music, and attending live concerts. She enjoyed running, playing tennis, and dearly loved her dogs. Those who knew her well will fondly remember her daily battles with Siri, which often provided as much laughter as frustration.

More than anything, Karen cherished gathering family and friends around a home-cooked meal, where lively conversation, contagious laughter, and lasting memories were always on the menu. She possessed a strong will, a warm heart, and an infectious smile that allowed her to make friends wherever she went. Her kindness, sense of humor, and unmistakable laugh will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A memorial service will be held 12pm, October 24, 2026 at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery 100 Resurrection Rd. Coraopolis, Pennsylvania 15108. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Karen's memory to the MS Focus: The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for people affected by multiple sclerosis.
