Joan "Joanie" Marzonie's Obituary

Joan "Joanie" Marzonie
February 10, 1929 - March 17, 2026
Northville, Michigan

Joan Marie Marzonie, age 97, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her beloved family. Born on February 10, 1929, she was the eldest of five children and a cherished matriarch.

Joan's journey began in Flint, Michigan, where she met the love of her life, Ted Marzonie, during her sophomore year at Flint Northern High School. Their love story blossomed, leading to their marriage on September 10, 1949, shortly after Ted returned from military service in post-war Japan. Together, they enjoyed 64 years of joy and companionship until Ted's passing in June 2014.

Throughout their lives in Allen Park and Northville, Joan and Ted were devoted stewards of their Catholic community. Whether she was serving as a member of the Women's Club, coordinating funeral lunches, or decorating their church for festive occasions, Joan consistently answered the call to serve. She stood proudly beside Ted as he engaged with the Order of Alhambra and the Knights of Columbus, embodying the spirit of community and faith.

At the heart of Joan's life was her family, which she cherished above all else. Together, she and Ted raised nine children, moving from Allen Park to Northville in 1961. Joan took immense joy in supporting her children through all their endeavors.

Passionate travelers, Joan and Ted enjoyed visiting destinations including Hawaii, London, Florida, Chicago, and northern lower Michigan. Even in her 90's, she enjoyed road trips from Northville to Rhode Island and from Denver to Reno with family. She also enjoyed spending time boating with their daughter and son-in-law on many of the Great Lakes.

Joan is survived by her loving family: Jan (Ron Silva), Barbara (Steve) Portera, Ted (Diana), Tom (Kathy), Karen (the late Larry) Flannery, Doug (Virginia), John (Dana), and Rob (Tracey). She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, as well as her son-in-law Alan Carter and brother Jack Myers. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband Ted, daughter Paula Carter, son-in-law Larry Flannery, brother Tom Myers, sisters Roberta (William) Mitchell, infant sister Caroline, stepbrother Joseph Shomsky, and her parents John and Helen Myers.

Joan will lie in state at the Church of the Holy Family on Meadowbrook Road in Novi, from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm on Monday March 23rd, followed by a Funeral Mass beginning at 3:00 pm.  Her cremains will be placed in a crypt alongside her husband at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in memory of Joan Marzonie.

Joanie was dearly loved by all and will be sorely missed!
