In Loving Memory of Jeffrey S. Philka
Novi, MI - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jeffrey (Jeff) Philka, a resident of Novi, Michigan, who departed this world on Monday, August 28, 2023, at the age of 67. Jeff, affectionately known as "Tank" by his close buddies, was a man of little words but a big heart, whose presence brought joy and warmth to the lives of all who knew him.
Jeffrey was born to David and Laura Philka in Oak Park, Michigan, and grew up as the loving brother of Marshall. He was a graduate of Berkley High School and Wayne State University, graduating a degree in accounting. Jeff dedicated many years to the steel industry in quality control, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues and superiors alike. His commitment and dedication to his work, including driving back and forth each day from Toledo, is just one example of his loyal nature.
Above all, Jeff cherished his role as a devoted husband, having shared 40 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Gabriele. He was a loving and supportive father to their children, Rachel, Matthew, and Andrew, and a proud uncle to Jordan Philka Sklar (James). Family was the cornerstone of Jeffrey's life, and his unwavering love and guidance will forever resonate in their hearts. Being a dad was one of his greatest joys, and if you ask the kids, he was the best at it.
Jeff had an unyielding love for Detroit sports and could often be found cheering on his favorite teams, especially the Lions, Red Wings, and Tigers. He relished in trips up-north where his idea of "camping" was at a Holiday Inn and having air conditioning. Jeffrey loved classic rock, especially the music of J. Geils. But perhaps where he found his most happiness was from spending quality time with his family, creating cherished memories that will be treasured forever.
Jeff was known for his great sense of humor, kindness, and caring nature. To many, he was a gentle giant with a heart of gold, always willing to lend a helping hand and bring a smile to those around him. His presence made every gathering a memorable occasion because he was sure to put a smile on your face.
If out and about, you might have bumped into Jeff at one of his favorite local places: Sam's Club, Meijer, or the casino. He also had the unique honor of teaching all three of his children how to drive, a task he undertook with patience and humor, leaving them with lasting lessons, fun memories, and perhaps some new "colorful language."
One of Jeffrey's favorite actors, John Candy, was a reflection of his own jovial personality. His most favorite movie, "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles," captured the essence of his life's journey – filled with laughter, camaraderie, and lots of heart.
Jeffrey will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love, laughter, and a kind heart will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Visitation will be held at the O'Brien/Sullivan Funeral Home, 41555 Grand River Avenue, Novi, on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 7:00 PM. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at 11:00 AM.
May his soul find eternal peace, and may his memory bring comfort to all who loved him.
