Obituary

Jean Dolores McKinnon was born to Clara and Oscar Gibbons February 25,1939 in Southfield, Michigan. She is preceded in death by her brother James Gibbons, her half sister Diane Sowder, her first husband Jess Holman (married 17yrs) and her second husband of 45 years Andrew McKinnon, and she is survived by her half sister Marcia Macias. She is the mother of seven biological children, Dawn (Bill) Bierlein, Sherry Kokko (Dave McBride), Kim (Mike) Campbell, Shelly Holman (deceased), Todd (Lisa) Holman, Andrea (Alan) Rofe and Jennifer (John) Skowron. Jean was the stepmother to Marie (Tom) Moore, Lisa (Vince) Gale, Julie McKinnon, and Kristine (Mark) Feldmann. Along with Andy, she was a very proud grandparent to 28 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Widowed at the young age of 34, with five little ones she had to become a very strong woman. Only three months after losing her first husband she then had to bury her mother. She gained great strength and worked very hard to provide for her family. A couple years later is when she met Andy McKinnon. He was an iron worker and a devoted, divorced father to four young girls. Jean and Andy were married in 1975 and blended her four daughters and son with his four daughters. In 1976 they had their first daughter together. In 1982 they were surprised again by yet another daughter. Their family of ten girls and one boy became their pride and joy.

After losing Andy to lung cancer and then her daughter Shelly also to lung cancer a few years later, Jean had a battle of her own. Mom was the strongest woman we knew but she really proved herself as she fought for six long years. Her wish was to be home and to pass surrounded by family. When it looked like that was not going to happen for her, God was gracious and granted a miracle to allow her to come home. We all had an amazing last few days with her sharing our love with her and bidding her a farewell as she embarked on her greatest adventure yet.

Loving Lord, hold close in our hearts the cherished memory of your servant, our mother. May we find comfort not in what is lost but in gratitude for the gift of her life and the love she shared with us all. Fill us with hope in your promise of eternal life, where one day we will be reunited in your perfect peace. We ask this with trust and faith through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

Visitation will be held for Jean and Andrew at the O'Brien/Sullivan Funeral Home on Thursday, August 27, 2026 from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with a Rosary beginning at 7:00 pm.
