In Loving Memory of James "Jim" Russell
James "Jim" Russell, age 87, peacefully passed away on April 30, 2024, surrounded by his loving family, after a sudden illness. Jim was born in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Wayland and Clara Russell.
Jim attended St. Frederick High School in Pontiac Michigan and went on to attend and graduate from Michigan State University with a degree in Packaging Engineering.
He is survived by his loving wife Jacqueline, his children Bruce (Sue) Russell, Marie (the late Vere) Wirwille and David (Karen Conroy) Russell. Grandfather to Bree (Alex), Owen (Samantha), Victoria, Lauren (Michael), Jim (Tammy), Caitlyn (Skyler), and Emily (RJ). Great grandfather to Oliver, Amelia and Lincoln. He was a dear brother to the late John Russell.
Jim was passionate about his career in Packaging Engineering, working in the field for 59 years. Started his career at Ayerst Pharmaceuticals in up-state New York, then moved to Chicago to work for Kraft Foods. He and his family returned to Michigan where he worked at Parke Davis and Burroughs. He retired from the Department of Army's Tank Division (TACOM) in 2019. Jim was an active member of The National Institute of Packaging, Handling, & Logistics Engineers (NIPHLE).
Jim grew up on Upper Straits Lake, where he developed his passion for the outdoors, including hunting, fishing and boating. Other hobbies included "fixing things", gardening and flying model airplanes that he hand-built. He and his wife Jackie participated in line dancing for many years, as well as travelling to places around the world.
For over 40 years, Jim was a dedicated Hunter Safety Instructor and especially enjoyed teaching each year at Outdoorama. He served as the Treasurer for the St. Frederick Alumni Board for many years, only retiring from that position this last year.
Visitation will take place at the O'Brien/Sullivan Funeral Home 41555 Grand River Ave. Novi, 48375 on Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Jim will be instate at Holy Family Catholic Church 24505 Meadowbrook Rd, Novi, 48375 on Friday, May 10, 2024 from 10:00 am until the Funeral Mass begins at 10:30 am.
Though he may no longer be with us, Jim's spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those he loved and touched. He will be deeply missed
