Heard, Homer L. Age 80. Homegoing October 17, 2022
HOMER LEE HEARD(ACE) was the second eldest of eight boys. His family moved to Detroit in 1949. He was educated in the Detroit Public School system. He graduated from Mumford High School in 1960. He enlisted in the United States Air Force where he received an honorable discharge as an Airman First Class after serving duty from August 1961 to August 1965.
Homer met Joyce Reed as a teenager and a loving relationship blossomed. Homer and Joyce joined in holy matrimony on October 23, 1961. From this union they were blessed with four beautiful daughters, Wanda, Angie, Kim and Sherry.
After a career in the U.S. Air Force, Homer attended Wayne State University. He was one of Wayne State's premier sprinters in the early 1970's. He set several records in Track and Field. He was inducted into the WSU Hall of Fame in 1997.
While attending and running at both WSU and HFCC, he was working full-time at the Pontiac Fisher Body Plant. He taught as a science teacher in Detroit Public Schools, retiring after 32 years. He graduated from Wayne State University in 1973.
Homer (Ace) enjoyed bowling and spending time with his bowling buddies. He was an exceptional bowler and earned numerous "300" rings. He was a self-taught guitarist and was passionate about playing. He most enjoyed spending time entertaining family and friends and the time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom he loved unconditionally.
Homer was preceded in death by his parents (Palmer and Cora Heard) and his brothers (William, Palmer Heard II, and Stanley).
Those left to enjoy the legacy of his love and to cherish many happy memories of his abundant life are his devoted wife Joyce of 60 years; his 4 daughters Wanda, Angie (Phillip), Kim (Kyle), and Sherry; 8 grandchildren Bianca, Andre Jr., Lauren, Kyle Jr., Phillip Jr., Kameron, Nyah and Kailee; 3 great grandchildren Derek III, Nova, and Amia; and his brothers Charles, Robert, Michael and Paul;and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives (Juno), and friends.
