Grant Everson, Jr. passed suddenly on Friday, January 5, 2024 in Wixom at the age of 93.
Grant Everson, Jr. was born on September 11, 1930, in Abbeville, Georgia to Mary Rogers Everson and Grant Everson.
After high school he joined the US Marines in 1951 and obtained the rank of Corporal.
After being honorably discharged in 1953, he moved to Detroit, Michigan and married Thelma Davis Everson in 1957. They honeymooned in Havana, Cuba and celebrated at the world-famous Copacabana.
Grant worked at Fisher Body Automotive for 11 years and became a foreman as his last position.
Thelma started Everson's Party Store in 1972 and Grant left the auto industry to manage the store while Thelma set her sights on opening a BBQ which she did in 1975. Both businesses flourished allowing them to become one of the first Black owned small businesses on West 7 Mile Road.
Grant attended Unity Church and in his free time enjoyed several hobbies such as playing pool & renovating cars. An avid sports fan, Grant loved football, basketball, baseball, and the Indy 500.
Grant retired in 2015 and moved to Wixom, Michigan. He and Barbara Dowe Spencer built a life together and enjoyed going on walks, going to the movies and other outdoor activities in Oakland and Wayne Counties.
Grant is survived by his son Tony Everson and daughter Cynthia Everson; daughter-in law Sylvia Barajas Everson; two grandchildren Michael Everson and Olivia Everson; 4 great-grandchildren; nieces Gladys Wallace and Eutha Wilson; and numerous extended family and friends in Michigan, New Jersey, Florida, Georgia, and Indiana.
Interment/ Military Honors will take place 1:00 PM, Thursday, January 11, 2024, at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
