With deep sadness the family of Grant Clarke announce his sudden passing on Saturday, August 6, at the age of 80, in Northville Michigan after suffering a fall. Born in Orangeville, Ontario, Grant travelled the world living and making many friends in Canada, Germany, the United States and Mexico.
Grant left home at age 16 to join the Canadian Army through the Soldier Apprentice Program as one of the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers' (RCEME) "Green Monsters" as the apprentices were nicknamed - probably with good reason. Making the military his lifelong career, Grant rose through the ranks from Craftsman to Major, retiring after more than 38 years of dedicated service. Through the military he formed many deep and lasting friendships that sustained him throughout his life. He loved to reminisce, telling stories of his early army days in Kingston and Lahr, tales that often had him laughing until tears streamed down his face.
He enjoyed fishing, particularly his once annual trips to Temiskaming. For Grant, card playing was a serious art with no place for foolishness at the card table. A true homemade butter tart connoisseur, he was also known to enjoy the occasional rye and water. In his younger years he was a scuba diver and an avid stamp collector. Always a bargain hunter, he appreciated shopping and negotiating with the beach vendors during winters spent in Mexico.
Left to mourn his loss is his devoted and beloved wife Nadine Merriman, loving daughters Carrie and Andrea Clarke and their husbands Kevin McBain and Rene Seguin, adoring step-daughter Amy Amin and her husband Adam. Cherished grandchildren Ryan and Lindsey McBain and Nathan and Avery Seguin. Fondly remembered by his niece and nephew Sarah and Spencer Clarke and special cousins Bonnie Brown and Jane Demmery. Grant was predeceased by his parents Clarence (Clarkie) and Ann Clarke (nee Wilson) and brother Don Clarke.
