Gary (Jin-Nan) Wang, age 69, of Novi, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on October 21, 2025. He was born on June 11, 1956, in Tainan, Taiwan, to the late Ching-Chuan Wang and Chi Shou.
Gary lived a life marked by integrity, humor, and an unwavering devotion to his family, his work, and his community. He was known by all who met him as humorous, playful, loyal, kind, honest, caring, and deeply loving. His warmth and charm left a lasting impression on friends, colleagues, and loved ones alike.
A lifelong learner and accomplished professional, Gary built an impressive career in international business and the automotive industry. After earning his B.A., he was commissioned as an ensign in the Taiwanese Navy. He began his journey in Japan with TRW Auto Parts as Manager of Operations and Market Development (1986–1991) before becoming Director for TRW Automotive Aftermarket (1991–1993). His expertise and leadership continued to grow as he took on roles as Regional Sourcing Director for Federal-Mogul, Far East (1993–1997), and Sales Director for Freudenberg-NOK (1997–2015), where he received the prestigious President Award – Circle of Excellence in 2004 for achieving new business results that far exceeded targets.
That same year, Gary was recognized by the Marketing & Sales Executives of Detroit (MSED) for his sustained success, market development, and community involvement. Later, he served as Sales General Manager for Toyota Boshoku America (2015–2017), Sales Director for THK Rhythm Automotive North America (2018–2021), and most recently, as a Council Member for Gerson Lehrman Group (2018–present), where his insights and experience continued to influence the industry.
In 1994, he was honored to speak at the World Trade Club of the Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce at the Ritz-Carlton in Dearborn, Michigan, presenting "How to Do Business with Japanese Companies," reflecting his depth of knowledge and global perspective.
He earned his B.A. from the National Chengchi University (Taiwan) in 1978, and earned his Master of Management Science from the University of Tsukuba (Japan) in 1983.
Outside of his professional life, Gary was a man who loved to travel, swim, and most of all, spend time with family and friends. He cherished the times spent with his friends and family in the US, London, Tokyo, and Taiwan. Whether sharing a laugh, telling a story, or planning his next adventure, he brought joy and connection to those around him.
Gary was also heavily involved in the local school and community. He and his family published a regular newsletter in Japanese for the growing Japanese community to assimilate into local life. Furthermore, he frequently volunteered his time for extracurricular activities at school.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Betty (Li-Hui Hsiao) Wang; his devoted sons, Jack Wang and Michael Wang; and his cherished grandsons, Hugo, Ray, and Kenji, who were the pride of his life. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Ching-Chuan Wang and Chi Shou.
Gary's legacy of kindness, laughter, and dedication will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will remain a source of love and strength for his family and friends around the world.
