Obituary

Fredrick Martin Read Jr. passed away on September 25, 2022. Born in St. Albans, Queens, on November 26, 1931, Fred was raised on Long Island. He attended Brooklyn Preparatory High School, and studied for a year at Georgetown University before entering the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., where he played end on the football team. He graduated on August 5, 1955, and married Mary Elizabeth Lunny on August 6, 1955. They were married until her passing in 2012.
The Reads lived in Japan and Long Beach, California, while Fred completed his service in the U.S. Navy. They moved to Michigan in 1959 and lived in Dearborn Heights for four decades before moving to Canton. Fred worked as a buyer for Ford Motor Company from 1959 until his retirement in 1990.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his parents, Frederick Martin Read Sr. and Edna Sheldon Morrison; and his sisters, Phyllis Thorpe and Margaret Klein. He is survived by his four children, Peggy Read (Dave Fudala), Sean Read, Jan Read (Greg Smith) and Ginnie Read, as well as his six grandchildren, Ben and Morgan Fudala; Jason (Karen), Sam and Keanan (Jessica Indyk) Smith; and Eliza Neumann; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 24505 Meadowbrook Rd, Novi, MI 48375. The gathering will begin at 10 a.m., with eulogies at 10:20 a.m and a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Luncheon will follow immediately at the church.
