Bartholomew Rakay, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away on April 2, 2024, in Livonia, Michigan. He was born on November 30, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan, to Agnes (nee. Bartha) and Frank Rakay.
Bart's early years were spent in the southern Michigan area alongside his beloved sister, Carol. His early work experience included helping his father with the family business, Frank's Men's Wear, in Detroit's Delray neighborhood – and it was as a summer playground Activities Director for the City of Dearborn, where he met his former wife, Susan.
With the birth of his son, Rich, Bart attended Wayne State University, first graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, followed by a Masters degree in Social Work. His MSW degree led to a career in psychiatric social work, mostly at Metropolitan Hospital, and later at Metro Medical Group, where he touched countless lives with his compassions and dedication. It was during his time at Metropolitan Hospital that he met his current wife, Mary.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Bart was known for his diverse interests and passions. He enjoyed the sounds of jazz, particularly the works of Bill Evans and Stan Getz. He found solace in the simplicity of browsing book sales at the library and delighted in spending quality time with his grandchildren, who affectionately knew him as "Plesto The Magician." His grandkids always delighted in learning slight-of-hand tricks from their grandpa. A proud native Detroiter, Bart was a loyal fan of his local teams (especially the Detroit Lions), holding season tickets for the Detroit Red Wings in the days of Olympia Stadium. Bart and his wife both had a passion for travel, and the two explored destinations such as Nevada, Arizona, Aruba, and Brazil.
Bartholomew is survived by Mary, his beloved wife of 40 years. He is also survived by his son, Rich (Susan) and his step children, Matt (Maureen) and Mary Kay. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Carol, Ashley, Kayla, Lauren, Katie, and Joe. He is the great grandfather of Harper Rose. Bart is predeceased by his parents, Agnes and Frank, and his sister, Carol.
