It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of April Hazard Vallerand Ph.D., RN, FAAN, of Novi, Michigan. April was a remarkable soul who touched the lives of many with her warmth and kindness. April's love knew no bounds; she poured her heart into everything she did, from caring for her beloved cats to doting on her children, Benjamin and Katharine Vallerand, daughter in law Amy Vallerand, and grandchildren (born and soon to be), Claire and Theodore. April had many loves but above all else, she loved her family the most. She was so excited to meet her grandson come this August and watch her daughter follow in her footsteps by receiving her doctorate.

April was more than a friend; she was a shining example of compassion and generosity. Her dedication to her work and her unwavering commitment to making the world a better place through her charitable endeavors inspired us all. She was a fierce advocate and lifted up the voices often left unheard.

April loved being a nurse, a researcher, and an educator. She graduated from Mount St. Mary's College, Los Angeles CA with her Bachelor of Nursing degree. She continued on to earn her Master's Degree from California State University. A distinguished scholar, her educational journey continued at the University of Pennsylvania where she earned her doctorate in Nursing, before going on to earn her postdoctorate.

As an Endowed Professor at Wayne State University, her research illuminated the dynamics of pain management as she aimed to make a difference in the lives of those living with pain. Lovingly known as "Dr. V", April welcomed all of her students with open arms and guided many.

April's kindheartedness was felt by everyone in her life, including her furry companions. From her cats, to her grand-dogs and grand-cats, and never forgetting about the local racoons, squirrels, and birds, she loved and cared for them all deeply. April's legacy of love and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Rest in peace, April…Dr. Vallerand…Dr. V…grandma…mom. You will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, March 23rd at 1pm at Novi United Methodist Church, 41671 W 10 Mile Rd., Novi, MI 48375. Guests are then invited to continue visiting at church until 4pm.
