Angelo Coratti
Farmington Hills, MI
Age 93 died, Monday March 28, 2016 at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital. He was born
December 24, 1922 in Highland Park, Michigan to Pio and Rosa (Macciocchi) Coratti. On June 5,
1948 he married Mary Romanelli at Santa Maria Catholic Church in Highland Park and she preceded him in death on March 17, 2011.
Angelo served in the Marines during WWII. He earned two purple hearts while serving in the South
Pacific and was present at the raising of the United States Flag at Iwo Jima. He graduated from
Wayne State University in Detroit where he played football and basketball. He continued at Wayne State earning his Master's degree in education. Angelo taught at Detroit Public Schools for over 40 years. Mr. Coratti coached football, basketball and baseball at St. Rita's Catholic School, and also coached football at Benedictine High School in Detroit where he was named coach of the year. He started a men's basketball program at Mercy College and was inducted to the Michigan High School Football Coach's Hall of Fame and the Detroit Catholic League Hall of Fame. Along with coaching and his love for education he also played semi-pro football for the Detroit Tars.
He and his wife Mary enjoyed a very blessed 62 years of marriage before she passed on March 17, 2011. They enjoyed family, friends, socializing and having a good time wherever they went.
Together, they brought life to every party and family gatherings. For seventeen years they wintered
in Palm Springs, Florida. They loved to travel and frequented Las Vegas where you could always
find Angelo at the craps table. Their family gatherings often included Sunday dinner at the house
and more recently Angelo would look forward to his Wednesday evenings dining out or going to
Coratti's on Main. He enjoyed people and always had interesting conversation. If you were lucky,
you would find yourself a recipient of one of his "special made" Manhattans.
He is survived by his children: Debra (Ronald) Wangrud, Richard (Nancy) Coratti, Thomas (Janice)
Coratti, Michele (Daniel) Pfeffer, and Peter Coratti, grandchildren: Curtis, Melia (Marc), Kristine
(Matthew), Anthony (Lindsay), Bryan, Alanna, Peter, Adrianna and Maria, great grandchildren:
Isabella, Bodhi, Caroline and Angelo, a sister Viola Perreca and a brother-in-law Peter Romanelli.
Besides his wife he was preceded in death by a brother Louis Mattia and his sister Dora Charles.
Visitation will be held at O'Brien-Sullivan Funeral Home 41555 Grand River, Novi on Wednesday
March 30th from 3:00-9:00pm. where a rosary will be led by Mike VanDyke at 7PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Fabian Catholic Church in Farmington Hills with Fr. Jeff Day as celebrant, on Thursday at 11:00am where he will lie in state beginning at 10:00am. Burial with full Military honorswill follow at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery in Southfield Michigan. at the funeral home.
