Obituary

Alfred Wallace Smith, Jr. 3/4/1927 – 6/11/2011 Al (Bud) loved life and learning.  Earning degrees from SUNY at Buffalo (Bachelor Technical Education), UM-D (Master…), UM Ann Arbor Rackham (PDED Professional Development in Engineering Degree).   At the age of 16 joined the Navy and was stationed in the Philippines during World War II for 3 years. Continuing his love of the water he navigated the Great Lakes for 50 years.  He was a life member of many associations including the Judges & Police Conference of Buffalo, American Legion, SUNY and UM Alumni.  An industrial educator and engineer for Ford Motor Company he wrote technical manuals for powertrain on many vehicle platforms including the Pantera and the Ford 9000 Truck.  He also taught automotive technology, economics and criminal justice at colleges including Schoolcraft College, Henry Ford Community College, Wayne State and UM-D.  Al was active in politics and ran for the State of Michigan Senate in the early 1970s.  A kind and compassionate person he often helped others in humble and quiet ways.  His sense of humor was his greatest trait which stayed with him to his final hours.  Survived by beloved wife Marjorie, loving children Mary (deceased Tom Brady), Katherine (Steven Kruis), Alfred (Deborah), Elizabeth (Jeffrey Sands), Marjorie (Michael McIntyre), Isabelle (Joseph Conti), Josephine (Daniel Antishin), adoring grandchildren; Elizabeth, Madelaine, Alfred, Juliana, John, Colton, Thomas and Katie, and devoted sister, Josephine K. Gerner of Lockport, New York.  Donations to the American Heart Association www.americanheart.org or the American Legion. Visitation at the O'Brien/Sullivan Funeral Home 41555 Grand River Novi 248-348-1800 Saturday 3-7pm with an American Legion Service at 7:00pm. Interment at Great Lakes National Cemetery Monday 1:30pm.
