Susan Maurene Webb

April 29, 2022

Susan Maurene Webb, age 82, passed away on April 24 at her home after a short illness. She was born in 1939 in Detroit, MI, and raised in Rochester Hills, MI. She graduated from Sanford Preparatory School (also known as the Sunny Hills School) in Hockessin, DE. There she excelled in academics and field hockey. She attended Wheaton College in Norton, MA before receiving her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Michigan. Susan worked as a psychologist before becoming the Co-Director of Chippewa Trail Camp in Elk Rapids, MI with Marian “Shorty” Simpler. She and Marian created an amazing summer camp experience on the shores of Elk Lake with young women attending from all over the world. Many young women remember her well as a mentor and as their first boss. After the camp closed in 1984, she joined the Human Resources department of the Jervis B. Webb Company in Farmington Hills, becoming CEO in 2003 until she retired in 2008. Susan was active in many local organizations, including the Meadowbrook Country Club and Leader Dogs for the Blind, plus board service with the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit and GreenPath™ Financial Wellness. Always athletic, she would lead her younger siblings in acts of daring, such as jumping off the railroad bridge into the local creek or racing to the top of Table Top Hill. She was a serious golfer and tennis player, but any game could get her competitive side going. Susan was an ardent fan of the University of Michigan and Detroit major league teams. She intently watched those games she couldn’t attend in person. Susan noted that a true fan remains a fan even when the team loses. Susan had many wonderful friends in her life; she loved dining out and taking golf trips together. A regular at several local restaurants, she counted many restauranters and servers as her friends and encouraged many in their pursuit of education and entrepreneurship. She was also an animal whisperer. Although she was less than 5 feet tall, animals obeyed and loved her, from tiny dogs to huge horses. She had many pets in her life, everything from rescue dogs to most recently, Standard Poodles. She helped many friends and family members with animal training tips and encouragement. She was preceded in death by her partner Marian Simpler, her mother Sarah “Sallie” Mallon, and her father Jervis C. Webb. She is survived by her siblings Jervis H. Webb (Diana), Virginia Webb (Michael Loux), Chris Webb (Genevieve), Martha Webb, James Mallon (Connie), Emily Ferry (Jeff), Larry Webb (Joyce), Mary Kawecki (Chris), multiple nieces and nephews, and her dear friend and assistant Chris Chism. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Huron Valley Humane Society (https://www.hshv.org/), your local animal shelter, or the YMCA (https://ymcadetroit.org/). Interment Old Stoney Creek Cemetery. A memorial service will be held 11;30 am, Sunday, May 29 at the Meadowbrook Country Club, Northville MI.
