Phillip Joseph Govan, 61, Detroit, died at 9:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 6, 2016 due to heart failure.
He may have had a weak heart but he had a heart of gold. He is preceded in death by his father, Edmond Govan. He is survived by his mother, Lorraine, his oldest sister Catherine Govan , Marge Govan, Michael Govan (Gretchen), Anne Govan Dickerson, James (Dorothy), and Charlotte Bond (Brian).
Phil loved spending time with his nieces and nephews; Phillip Gordon (Jamie), Harrison, Carter and Gracen Govan, Brandon and Jake Dickerson, Ellie and Michael Govan, and Kenneth, David and Alexis Bond.
He was a writer, musician, exceptional athlete, loving brother and dear friend to many. The oldest son and a native Detroiter, he attended St. Francis De Sales, Detroit Catholic Central High School ('73) and Michigan State University. As an entrepreneur, he founded the University Reporter, a national weekly periodical focused on campus life. He went on to publish multiple books. When Phil wasn't writing, he was known as the Perfect Painter in the Detroit metro area.
Phil will be remembered for his humor, gentle spirit, and love of music. He was a true glass half full optimist. Most of all, Phil will be remembered for being the best son, brother, uncle, cousin, and a friend to all.
Visitations will be held Saturday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the O'Brien Funeral Home 41555 Grand River Novi. A rosary service will be held at 5:00 PM on Sunday. Funeral Liturgy Monday at the Detroit Catholic Central Chapel 27225 Wixom Road Novi, Michigan at 4:30 PM.
