Obituary

Matt McKeown was an accomplished engineer, University of Michigan graduate, and one-of-a-kind friend who spread joy with his contagious smile and endless sense of (sarcastic) humor.

Matt loved spending time outdoors. Between the months of May through October you would find Matt on the golf course, or gazing into the woods as a passionate birdwatcher, hoping to catch a glimpse of a rare migrating bird. Some of Matt's greatest memories were made during fishing and hunting trips with his closest friends or at his local bowling alley with teammates. He enjoyed sharing a pint of his award-winning home brew, often served with an appetizing dish never to be duplicated.

His generosity was second to none. Matt made it his mission to ensure that everyone had a good time when they were around him. He was always the first to reach for the check, offer to help carry furniture during a move, and the kind of guy who would literally give you the shirt off his back.

Surrounded by loved ones, Matt passed away on September 16, 2021 at the age of 40, after fighting a courageous four-year battle with ALS.

Throughout the disease progression, Matt utilized his "engineer brain" to overcome every obstacle. After all, every problem had a solution! He created a list of over 100 tools and/or inventions to help maintain his quality of life. Matt's ingenuity was so inspiring that he was featured in a Detroit Free Press article, which was picked up by USA Today: you can read the article here

Since his diagnosis in 2017, Matt had been an advocate for raising awareness and donations for ALS of Michigan. Matt and his caretakers experienced firsthand the support and equipment ALS of Michigan provided to improve the quality of his life from the time of his diagnosis until the end. It was Matt's last wishes that those who knew him would continue to fight against ALS and help fellow pALS (People with ALS) who one day hope to hear the word "treatable" and not "terminal".

As a tribute to Matt, please consider making donation to ALS of Michigan. His team name is "Marching for Matty".
