Jimmy L. Haugen, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on June 28, 2023, at the age of 89. He was born on August 21, 1933, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, to the late Nels and Alma Haugen. Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Ellen, his brothers Kenneth, Dean, Ardell, and sister Adeline, as well as by his beloved dog Daffodil. He is survived by his children Jimmy (Julie), Kari, Jan (Bob), and Leigh (Catherine), as well as by his 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. In addition to his children, Jimmy leaves behind a sister-in-law Carmen, dear friend Lois, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Jimmy pursued his education at the University of North Dakota, where he completed his undergraduate studies. After college he proudly served as a captain in the Air Force for three years. He then went on to earn his Master's degree in Business from Michigan State University and a Master's degree in Engineering from Wayne State University.
A man of many accomplishments, and even more good ideas, Jimmy's professional journey thrived in the fields of engineering and marketing, as well as in his consulting business. His confidence and self-assurance propelled him forward, allowing him to achieve great success.
Jimmy's unwavering dedication was best exemplified in his loving care for his wife Mary Ellen. For nearly 60 years, he stood by her side, providing care and support, including being her primary caregiver towards the end of her life. Inspired by their journey, Jimmy authored a heartfelt book titled "Pook's Caregiver: Five Years Coping with Parkinson's, Lewy Body, Stroke, and AFIB." Through his words, he shared their story of resilience and love.
Jimmy approached life with an adventurous spirit, and his passion for the outdoors was evident in his love for kayaking, skiing, biking, tennis, golf, sailing, and wind surfing. Even in his later years, he continued to embrace new challenges, completing the grueling 65-mile "Rode to Hell" bike event in Hell, MI, when he was in his eighties.
Jimmy's zest for life extended to the natural world, where he found solace and joy. He recently trekked through snow-covered landscapes with a pair of snowshoes, embracing the beauty of winter. Nature was his sanctuary, and he reveled in its grandeur until the very end.
