Andrew Nelligan's Obituary

Age 90 of Detroit, Michigan died May 17, 2008. Born May 22, 1917 in Grimsby Ontario, the son of Dan and Mary Nelligan. His family moved to Detroit in 1924 and AJ soon became a US citizen and active member of St. Leos Parish. He married Justine Malaniak on December 23, 1942. AJ served with honor during the Second World War in the Pacific Theatre with the 5th Air Force, and until recent health problems, greatly enjoyed attending his Unit's annual reunions around the country, and keeping in touch with his old service buddies. After WWII, AJ settled with his family in Detroit's Saint Scholastica Parish, where he soon became an active member in the Dads Club, participating in many fund raising activities over the years. He was also a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a wonderful, loving husband and father, and adored his grandchildren. AJ was employed with the JL Hudson Company for 28 years before retiring in 1975. Having collected his Teamsters Pension for over 32 years, he liked to remark how happy he was that he kept up his Union Dues... An avid musician, AJ was a long time member of the Ban-Joes of Michigan, as well as the Golden Bells singing group. He greatly enjoyed performing for many charity organizations, bringing his love of music to the public. Also fond of poetry, AJ wrote many poems and essays pertaining to current events and the world around him, which showcased his great sense of humor, and were truly enjoyed by family and friends. As hard as he worked all his life, AJ always made time for his wife and kids. He looked for the best in everybody, and like so many of his generation, despite what he had been through and seen, remained an optimist. He genuinely liked people, and wanted everyone to like him. Everyone did. He will be greatly missed. AJ was predeceased by his wife, Justine, and daughter Justine "Tina" Lind. Surviving are his two sons, Daniel (Jan) and James (Pat); daughter Patricia (Joel) Popa; and five grandchildren, Diana, Chrissy, Kristen, John and Chris, two great grandchildren Elliot and Weston. Instate at Our Lady of Sorrows 23815 Power Rd. in Farmington Wednesday at 9:30 AM until the Funeral Liturgy at 10:00 AM. Donations to charity of choice.
